Homemade Bread

Pin It now! I made bread for the first time ever! Yay! My mom gave me a bread maker for Christmas and I think that I am in love. My first loaf didn't turn out perfect, but it's not my fault... Well, it was my fault but it was an accident. Let me explain. I had the bread maker sitting on the counter under the cupboards where I keep my dishes. The bread maker was doing it's thing, you know...making bread. And I was making dinner. (Unfortunately the bread would not be finished in time to have with dinner, I didn't plan it out that well. Oops!) Anyway, I got into the cupboard to get out some plates for me and Dawson and I somehow managed to drop 2 plates onto the bread maker (while the dough was rising) and then the plates fell on the floor and broke. Thank God that Dawson was not in the kitchen with me like he usually is because the glass flew every where!!!

After I got all the glass cleaned up, I looked in the little window on top of the bread maker and the top of the dough was sunk in. Bummer! I'm almost positive it's because I dropped dishes on top of the bread maker.

Here is what the white bread looked like right after I dumped it out of the pan...

Looks pretty good...because that is the bottom. :-) I flipped it over and it wasn't pretty.

My poor bread! It was ugly! So I flipped it back over and cut into it. :-)

You can still tell that it was deformed, but that's ok. It tasted AWESOME! I was so proud of myself. I was still bummed that the top had caved in so I decided to make some more. I had to make sure that it was because I dropped something on the machine and not because I did something wrong. For the 2nd loaf I decided to try cinnamon raisin bread. Yum!!!

And here is how it turned out. The bottom...

And now for the top...

It came out PERFECT! *jumps for joy*

I love cinnamon raisin bread! It tasted SO good. Both the recipes that I used came with the bread maker. Next time I make bread (probably next week) I want to try and find an apple cinnamon bread recipe. Does anybody have one? Or a good recipe that they recommend?

And, this is off topic, but I am sending out my first set of postcards today for the postcard exchange! I'm excited to get going on this and to start receiving postcards, too. If you don't know what I am talking about you can read about the postcard exchange here. It's going to be super fun!

Happy New Year's Eve! I hope everybody has a fun and safe night!

There's nothing better then fresh homemade bread!!

If you're looking for a great whole wheat recipe try this: http://articles.urbanhomemaker.com/index.php?article=83 ...the variations she has are great too.

If I ever want "pretty" bread I end up taking it out of the bread maker & finishing it in regular bread pans in the oven. I tend to get less "character" that way.

Happy New Years!

Stopping by from SITS! Have fun with your new bread maker! My favorite is pizza dough - just add a little italian seasonings to it and it feels SO gourmet!

My mom has a bread maker, and it's pretty nifty. I've never used hers and I don't have one of my own but if I was the kinda girl to bake, I would totally make bread left and right. My mother in law makes this bread, Banana/Choco Chip bread. OMG it's good. I totally need to learn how to make it for myself cause she doesnt make it often enough. Same with my mom's coffee cake bread.

Yum. Even your tester bread looks good. As long as it didn't come out looking green and it's edible I say you did a great job. And the cinnamon raisin looks delish!

My best, Lynn

I think your bread looks great! I've only ever tried to make gluten free bread in a bread maker with my mum and it usually ends up being a tasty but small brick of bread. haha.

Good luck with your future bread endeavours!

I've been experimenting with Challah. My breadmaker handles it well and it makes 2 big loaves. 1 c warm water, 5 eggs, 6T butter, 1.5t salt, 5c flour, 4T gluten, 1/2c brown sugar, 1.5T yeast. If it's super airy at the end, knead it down by hand then let it rise again for 10 minutes before you break it into 6 equal pieces and braid the 2 loaves.
